Aan mijn Nederlandstalige lezers uit België en eigenlijk ook wel Nederland,
Een paar weken terug kwam ik in contact met een bureau, genaamd Vol-au-vent. Zij zijn de bezielers van het jaarlijkse evenement “De Week van de Smaak”. Sinds dit jaar coördineren zij ook een nieuw project, genaamd “Grandma’s Design”. Dit project is internationaal en werkt samen met partners in Nederland, Turkije, Italië en Finland. Het wil een internationale brug slaan tussen grootmoeders en designers. Grootmoeders hun bakrecepten zullen door designers in een nieuw jasje gestopt worden. Recepten van grootmoeders worden verzameld en hiermee gaan de designers in het kader van een wedstrijd aan de slag.
Concreet zijn ze op zoek naar 15 à 20 grootmoeders met typische bakrecepten. Wat moet je onder “typisch” verstaan? Gerechten die grootmoeder al van kleins af maakt, taarten die uw oma altijd in dezelfde periode maakt, cakes met een verhaal, kortom bakrecepten met een verhaal of een geschiedenis. De grootmoeder zal gefilmd worden, terwijl ze bakt. Dit filmpje komt samen met het recept online. Later gaan de designers daar dan mee aan de slag. Belangrijk is echter dat we zo snel mogelijk die grootmoeders verzamelen. Ken je zo iemand met een recept en de wil om gefilmd te worden? Mail dan vliegensvlug naar mezelf (declercqpieter@gmail.com) of nog beter, dadelijk naar joris@volauvent.be.
Wat is mijn taak? De recepten en de grootmoeders zoeken, ze kort interviewen en op hun gemak stellen tijdens het filmen, de interviews uitschrijven en vertalen naar het Engels. Dit alles gebeurt in samenwerking met Marc Declercq, een culinair journalist.

A Belgian office, called Vol-au-Vent contacted me. They asked me if I wanted to help them. Vol-au-vent vzw organizes the yearly Week of Taste. They now will start with a new, international, project, called Grandma’s Design. This is what they say. A full explanation, you find on their website.
Grandma’s Design: what’s in a name?
Grandma’s Design is based on an idea raised Vol-au-Vent and its partners from Belgium, The Netherlands, Italy, Finland and Turkey. Together they want to build a bridge between two groups that at first sight might seem incompatible: grandmothers and designers. The project’s aim is to draw attention to the variety of baking traditions in Europe as represented by grandmothers from different countries. This not only in order to preserve these traditions, but also to give them a new life. That is where the designers will play their part. They will use the recipe and the heritage surrounding it as a source of inspiration for concepts and products with an emotional and historical value. The soul of the grandmothers’ story will be passed on through a contemporary design concept.
In each country we will look for about 20 grandmothers and baking recipes that are worth being preserved because of the heritage, “couleur locale”, tradition our stories attached to them. The grandmothers will be filmed, allowing them to share with us not only the recipe, but also their thoughts and feelings. These films will feature on an international website and European designers are invited to “reinvent” the baking recipes in their own way. Designers and grandmothers are encouraged to exchange experiences and ideas.
We are currently looking for grandmothers (65 years and older) that still know how to prepare an authentic sweet baking recipe and are willing to share their stories with us. Are you or do you know someone that might be interested in participating in Grandma’s Design? contact: Joris@volauvent.net
